MTAQ 2009 L.E.G.O. Conference

14/10/2009
In the September holidays nearly 50 teachers from across Queensland gathered at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays for the annual Marine Teachers Association of Queensland Conference. The wonderful team from Mackay and surrounding districts put on an exciting, informative and fun conference.

BRISBANE NORTH MAST DAYS

15/11/2007
Brisbane North Region hold regular meetings each term to discuss things like conference and MAST days. We usually have 2 MAST days running back to back with Southern Cross Catholic College using the Thursday for 100 year 11 students and Deception Bay SHS/Brackenridge SHS/Craigslea SHS holding their MAST day on the Friday.

MAST days are held in the waters of the Moreton Bay Boat Club, Scarborough Harbour where we have the use of the clubs boat ramps, pontoons, toilets and kiosk.

The mornings activities (9am-noon) consist of students rotating through marine skills such as constructing rafts from "scrap" material (25 L drums, rope and wood) and propelling participants to a buoy and return, capsized tinny exercise, donning type 1 PFDs and swimming to and boarding a 8 man life raft and performing T rescues in double kayaks.

We have a flare permit from noon to 12.15 pm quickly followed by lunch.

After lunch (1-2pm) we have instructional sessions with the local fire brigade, department of fisheries and the MSQ jet ski enforcement squad.

We hope to hold our first meeting for 2008 at the Moreton Bay Boat Club towards the end of term1.

I am also working with other marine teachers to organise the 2008 conference at the University of Queenslands Research Station at Dunwich, North Stradbroke Island. This venue has great surf beaches, snorkeling and scuba dive sites as well as access to mangrove studies, rocky seashore studies and window/perched lakes. Hopefully we will have many participants taking advantage of this site in 2008.

BRISBANE NORTH DUAL MAST DAYS

30/10/2006
M.A.S.T. DAY
Marine & Aquatic Skills & Training Day
Moreton Bay Boat Club
Scarborough
26 October 2006

Brisbane North Region held their 2 MAST days, back to back, on the 25 and 26 October. Approximately 200 students attended over the both days with students from Deception Bay SHS, Bribie Island SHS, Craigslea SHS, Caboolture SHS and Clontarf SHS attending on Wednesday 25 October and students from Southern Cross Catholic College attending on Thursday 26 October. The Southern Cross College activity is also used as a leadership selection day so all year 11 students attend this day.

After obtaining the Aquatic Event Permit ($24 from MSQ) and the Flare Permit - also booking the venue, the MSQ jet skis, Fisheries Department and the local fire brigade we then went ahead with our MAST day.

Proceedings started at 0900 until 1200 with students rotating through a series of skills -

1. Constructing a raft from barrels, rope and wood and 2 members navigating that raft to a buoy and back - an event that is timed but also dry crew are rewarded with extra points.

2. Capsizing, righting and baling a tinnie - 4 buckets tied inside the tinnie lures too many into the tinnie and so delays baling time.

3. Performing T- rescue with double kayaks - requires intelligence and upper body strength

4. An Elements of Shipboard Safety drill where participants must link arms , kick to and board a life raft with and injured patient.

5. Operation of MSQ jet skis where students learn some extra safe operation skills.

These skills tested safety, initiative, leadership, teamwork and also combined to make it a fun day.

Flares were ignited between 1200-1215, followed by lunch and talks/demonstrations by Fisheries and Fire Brigade 1300-1400, followed by dismissal of students.

A perfect venue and hospitality was supplied by the Moreton Bay Boat Club, also thanks to MSQ for supplying jet skis (thanks Mark and Steve), to Fisheries (thanks Meagan and Deb) and also thanks to the Redcliffe Fire Brigade.
